Watch Commander Richard Meakin has worked at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for 20 years. Richard is also an On-Call Liason Officer and supports management with on-call recruitment.

About the station

Skelmanthorpe Fire Station was constructed in 1956 and sits on the outskirts of the village centre.

The station covers the area south of Huddersfield which includes Skelmanthorpe, Denby Dale, Upper and Lower Cumberworth, Upper and Lower Denby, Emley, Scissett, Shelley, Clayton West, Shepley, Kirkburton and High Burton.

The station serves a population of approximately 31,500 with around 13,000 dwellings and borders with Mirfield, Huddersfield and Holmfirth Fire Stations along with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

Crews have fundraised over £30,000 in the past 10 years by way of extreme events such as as 24hr ladder climb, run to Chatsworth house and 24hr indoor rowing challenge.

Skelmanthorpe station is a wildfire station supporting specialists in dealing with incidents on moorland.

Employers  in the local community allow their on-call firefighters to leave work at a moment’s notice when their pager alerts them to an emergency. Crew members at Skelmanthorpe also have jobs at: JSC Construction, A V Motors, Royal Mail and MTR Windows.

Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor Who, comes from Skelmanthorpe.
