Fire Prevention

As a firefighter, you’ll be required to carry out duties that prevent or reduce the risk of a fire occurring in the first place.

As a Firefighter, you will play a vital role in keeping communities across West Yorkshire safe. A key part of your work will involve educating the public about fire safety in the home, alongside supporting wider risk reduction initiatives such as road and water safety.

Through our Safe and Well visit programme, you will meet a wide range of individuals in their homes, providing tailored, person‑centred fire safety advice. You will assess risk, support individuals to reduce those risks, and take appropriate action for early intervention, working closely with our Prevention teams and partner agencies to deliver a high-quality, community-focused service.

Education is central to our how we engage with our communities. You will deliver bespoke sessions in schools on topics such as fire risk, anti‑social behaviour and water safety. Beyond the classroom, you will represent the service at a wide range of community events, promoting key safety messages and supporting local campaigns throughout the year.

Other Involvement in Prevention Work

If you are passionate about being a positive role model and making a lasting difference in the lives of young people, you may have the opportunity to become a Youth Interventions Instructor.

In this role, you will work alongside our specialist Youth Interventions Team to deliver interactive early intervention programmes for young people aged 8 to 25, helping to build resilience, encourage positive behaviours and reduce risk.
