On-Call Firefighter

Favourite part of my job

Wearing the uniform. I enjoy public events and being able to show kids (and adults) around the fire engine and equipment.

I’m proud of everything I do as a firefighter from fire safety projects to putting out fires but I think what makes me most proud is definitely driving through the village in the fire engine.

Hobbies and interests

Outside from work I run 33rd Slaithwaite Scout Group for over 100 young people aged 6 to 18 and I manage 20 volunteers.

I enjoy squash, football and generally being an active member of the community; I organise the Christmas lights display, Remembrance Sunday parade and helping the local community centre.

Interesting Fact

I’ve been a contestant on Countdown and on Icelandic TV (as a scout).

Quote

"I fit being an on-call firefighter around my family, job, hobbies by planning and not over-committing. Getting a good work life balance can be difficult but my managers are approachable and will be pragmatic about my situation.

Having realistic expectations helps but I’ve found it pretty easy going once my family and I got into the pattern of my work commitments and time on-call.

I always set time aside for my family to ensure we have time together without my alerter going off."
